Course Reflective Narrative
JAPN 301, although intended to only fulfill one MLO, helped my understanding of MLOs 1 and 2. In particular, this course was structured so that students were able to apply better understanding of the Japanese language using examples from both traditional and pop culture in Japan. One of our units centered on the idea of Ocha-ji, or tea ceremonies. This included Kaiseki-ryori, where we later did a project that had us Americanize a traditional Japanese dish. In my case, I created the idea to make Ochazuke with chicken meat and broth to serve to an American customer base. We also explored manga and anime as a topic subject, where the final unit project was a partner presentation. For this project, my partner and I decided to choose my favorite anime/manga Ao Haru Ride, also known as Blue Spring Ride.
Not only was I able to learn and practice new vocabulary and grammar in this course, but I was also able to learn more about both Japanese traditional and pop culture, which is sure to be useful in future abroad studies. I was also able to practice switching between informal and formal Japanese quickly to suit any everyday situation I may find myself in while in Japan.
