Course Reflective Narrative
The backbone of my Capstone was created and workshopped in JAPN 403 initially. Within the first three weeks of this course, I was matched with a research partner and chose the subject of our Capstone project. With the help and guidance of our Japanese professors, we were able to form an outline of our project. Initially, this included a title, our research questions, and our hypotheses, as well as our significance of studies, which we later translated into fluent Japanese with the guidance of our professors. This document was later added onto as we began brainstorming survey questions to be used for our research.
Like all research projects, we also had to create a review of literature to support our hypotheses, which this course also aided us with. With periodic visits from our school librarian, we were able to learn how to use CSUMB's One Search database in the most effective way possible, as well as how to find sources from other outside sources. However, considering how much research and work needed to be done, JAPN 403 also tested my time management and cooperation/communication skills. I not only had to focus on passing my own independent courses, but also had to create a research project in full cooperation with another Japanese major student, as well as communicate all of our progress with our professors. Without the knowledge and guidance provided within this course our Capstone wouldn't have been able to become the strong research project it came out to be.
